Thoughtful article, Sarah. I agree that no one, male or female, ought seek a position of service to God with strings attached, nor with the purpose of having his or her existence defined by a mere title, in a quest for power or stature for its own sake. I can’t think of a good reason not to define someone in any position (not necessarily office) of leadership as a leader, though, as both indicator and descriptor of the type of ministry. To avoid doing so is unnecessary, and perhaps an equivocation. Further, anyone who has authority from God to preach the gospel to anyone in any way is in a position of authority, whether or not there’s a title or office to go with it (which seems to be what you are saying near the article’s end-let me know if I’m wrong!)

I also think there can be honest and virtuous disagreement about the exact nature of Scripture’s authority in relation to the Trinity, and we are as amiss to declare theological certainty where it does not exist as to promote theological uncertainty when it is not warranted. There are slippery slopes in both directions, though they are not an inevitability on either side.

As well, Eve’s error is not limited to the female sex: men can and do reduce a personal relationship to God to private interpretation based on idolatry and self-reliance. I think your advice is sound for members of either sex!

Just a point: evangelical egalitarian women may come across as particularly strident/aggressive as a reaction to the hostility they face in what has been a male dominated church. What in a man looks like appropriate assertiveness is often not accepted in a women especially to a culture that embraces patriarchy. Such cultures usually have a very prescriptive idea of how women should behave.

Just a heads up, in the first sentence it should be "a bright, young woman" rather than "an bright, young women". It gave me a bad first impression.
Best

I wouldn't say that all egalitarians are power hungry, but risk the tendency moreso than their complementarian counterpart. That isn't to say that the complementarian doesn't struggle with their own sin issues, but not related to achievement. I am speaking directly to what I'm observing of the current conversation among prominent/popular egalitarian writers.

Perhaps you can clarify whether you are insinuating that ALL egalitarians are power-hungry "terrorists" who do not qualify as evangelicals?

Whether it be football or blogs or The Five or digging ditches...whatever we do, do it for God's glory - right!? Col 3:23 and since we are all talking about God, Romans 8:28 or all of Romans 8! Thanks for provoking thoughts!
